Ditch Disposable is a campus-wide campaign led by the HKU  Sustainability Office to reduce plastic waste by targeting single-use plastic water bottles and other disposable items across campus.

Ditch Disposable CAMPAIGN

It started with an initiative to eliminate single-use plastic water bottles of 1 litre or less at University events, restaurants, retail outlets and vending machines.

On 22 March 2017, a kick-off ceremony was held at Haking Wong Podium with free drinks, music, and speeches from local NGOs and our champions to launch the Ditch Disposable initiative.

Faculties, departments, caterers and student groups have pledged to Ditch Disposable and Choose Reusable and be early champions!

1 July 2017 marked the the start of the Policy on disposable plastic bottles which ended the sale and distribution of disposable plastic water bottles of 1 litre or less on campus.

Eight UGC-funded universities launched a joint environmental campaign “UNIfy: Skip the Straw” on 12 March 2018 to reduce single-use plastic straws. On 12-16 March 2018, HKU will host a No Straw Week on campus, and will continue the effort to reduce disposable plastic straws use with the upcoming No Straw Mondays.

Starting from 3 September 2018, HKU will ban single use plastic straws (except in medical or emergency circumstances). Leading up to this ban we will hold No Straw Mondays every week, during which caterers will distribute single use plastic straws only upon request.
